How To Add More Smoke To A Pellet Grill

One of the most heard problems people have with pellet grills is the lack of smoke flavor in the meat they cook.

Although I believe that this was more a problem with the older types and models there are ways to increase the smoke flavor when you use a pellet grill.

A pellet grill in general produces less smoke than a stick smoker and this brings up the question of how do I get more smoke in my pellet grill.

“Here I will offer some of the solutions I have used.”

Smoke tube

I tried to find the best smoke tube for pellet grills and this is the one I use myself.

These are just a few of the pellet grill recipe categories I will write about. Many people think that grilling or smoking is not good for you. For that reason, I will also add some healthy pellet grill recipes and show that using wood pellets to cook food can be healthy.

There are people who search for recipes for their specific bran pellet grill and some of the ones I see are for Pit Boss and Traeger pellet grill recipes. However, all the recipes I have here can be cooked on about all brands.

If you have not decided yet if this type of cooking is for you, you can look at the pellet grill reviews I did to find all the pellet grill features.

By adding a smoke tube to your pellet smoker and filling it with pellets you can add quite a lot of extra smoke.

Some people complain that the extra temperature messed with the controller. I never had that problem and still, use a smoke tube once and a while.

A nice extra that a smoke tube offers is that you can also use it for cold smoking on a pellet grill as you can read in that article.

All you do is fill the tube with the same pellets as you use in your hopper and light them with a torch. After a few minutes, it will start to smolder and you can add it to the smoke chamber of your pellet grill.

Foil Package

This is a very old method that is mainly used on gas grills to get a smoke flavor. As you know a gas grill does not give a lot of real BBQ taste to the meat you cook on it and a foil package helps.

You make a package out of aluminum foil and fill this with wood chips. When you place it straight above your firepot it will slowly burn the woodchips and add some extra smoke to the pellet grill cooking chamber.

I advise using restaurant-quality aluminum foil. This you can also use to wrap meat. Here is my preferred brand.

It is not my preferred method but if you don’t want to spend money on a smoke tube this is a cheap, but not so effective, alternative.

Upgrade Your Pellet Grill

An upgrade to a newer pellet grill is maybe a good option if you are already thinking about replacing it for what reason you might have.

Updating to a newer controller for a more steady temperature is affordable but if you would upgrade to a new pellet grill with a new PID controller that ad more smoke compared to older models will kill two birds with one stone.

Advantages Of New Pellet Grills For More Smoke

I see many newer models come out with a downdraft on a pellet grill instead of a chimney and I believe that this adds a lot more smoke to your pellet grill. Click on that link to read all about it.

I also see that some pellet grill brands have new settings that can be used to produce more smoke by pressing a button on the controller.

There are newer models coming out now that are equipped with a downdraft system as you can read in my Traeger Timberline review.

Sometimes a video is the best way to show things and I found one that does exactly that.

More Smoke In A pellet Grill – My Opinion

It is very personal how much smoke flavor you like in the meat that you cook on your pellet grill. It is however a fact that compared to regular smokers a pellet grill produces less smoke.

I have described two ways to add more smoke to a pellet grill and they both work. However, my personal favorite is the smoke tube. I think it produces more smoke than a foil package and it will last longer.

On my cold smoke sessions, it will last around 4 hours before I have to add more pellets to it.

If you have a method to add more smoke to your pellet grill feel free to let me know and I will add it here.
