Pellet Grill vs Gas Grill

pellet grill versus gas grill

If you are looking for an easy-to-use and versatile barbeque grill, the consideration comes to pellet grill vs gas grill.

There is no sincerer love than the love of barbecue! However, to express the true love of barbecue, you must own the right grill.

There were fewer brands back in the day, and perhaps buying a grill was a straightforward task. Nowadays, there is a vast range of grills available.

This post breaks down the differences between the pellet grill and the gas grill. I will examine each based on the health benefits, ease of use, the difference in purchasing, cost of fuel, and eco-friendliness.

“Let us jump straight in!”

Type of Fuel Used

The main difference between the two barbeque grills is the fuel used to cook your food. The pellet grill uses wood pellets made of compressed sawdust. These pellets are made of various wood types, allowing you to choose the appropriate smoke flavor.

On the other side, gas grills run on propane or natural gas.

“While propane and natural gas burn cleaner than wood pellets, you may not experience the rich smoky taste of your barbeque.”

Cost Of Operating

Whether you are looking for commercial use or residential use barbeque, the cost of running is often a consideration for many buyers.

It might help to know that buying pellets is cheaper than refilling the propane tank. A Michigan State University report indicates that propane is more than 26% more expensive than non-subsidized wood pellets.

Impact On Flavor

For a distinct smoky flavor, choose the pellet grill. You can read my wood pellet flavor guide for that.

By contrast, steak barbequed on the best propane grills may not be rich in taste compared to pellet grilled steak and you might have to add some wood to it for that reason.

Instead, if you use a propane grill, you may need to apply some seasoning for that distinct taste and flavor, but it obviously does not taste like the steak grilled on pellet grills.

Health Benefits

When it comes to matters to do with health, the wood pellet grills produce a higher level of monoxide, hence not suitable for use indoors. However, if you are like many Americans, barbeque tastes better outdoors. Therefore, this is likely a non-issue.

However, propane grills or natural gas grills can be a great alternative if you love to barbecue indoors on your stovetop.

Ease of Use

Both gas grill and pellet grill feature a similar setup and fire management techniques. Both are easy to start with the switch of a button, and you can adjust the temperature quickly.

However, when it comes to cleaning, it is a different story. For the pellet grills, you have to manage the ash from the burnt pellets.

“There is no ash for the gas grill, so these are easier to clean in general.”

Versatility

A gas grill can double as a smoker. Therefore, you have more options for cooking, which means more versatility. On the other side, you are allowed to roast, smoke, and barbecue grill on a pellet smoker.

Some pellet grills offer the option of direct grilling, and they are more versatile than other grilling options available.

Video Explanation

Many times a video can explain things a lot better than I can. I particularly liked this one, although a little older, since it is very objective.
